FACILITIES IN WELLNESS CENTRE
The College’s Wellness Centre currently houses the nurses' and guidance counsellor’s offices. There is a female sick bay which comprises 4 beds and a male sick bay which has 2 beds. Both sick bays have their own fully functional bathroom facilities. There is an adequate reception area which provides water via a water dispenser as well as television and cable facilities while waiting to be seen. There is a triage area where all health cases are assessed to decide the order of treatment. There is a designated area for treatment and observation of students and staff, which is known as the Treatment / Examination room. As the name suggests, this room is utilized for assessment and to carry out care whilst providing privacy for both students and staff. It comprises a handwash basin for the cleansing of hands during and after care. In light of the current pandemic (COVID-19), an isolation area has been set up for the management of any student, faculty or staff member who displays suspected COVID-19 symptoms until they can be disposed to a health facility or home.
Opening Hours
The center is opened to students seeking medical care every day except for public holidays. Opening times are between the hours of 8:30 am-10:00 p.m. on Mondays to Wednesdays and 9:00 a.m.-5:00 pm on Thursdays to Sundays. A nurse is on call Monday to Wednesday 10:00 p.m-8:30am and Thursday to Sunday from 5:00 pm- 8:30 am to attend to or give advice on emergency situations.
NB: What is an EMERGENCY? A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous (life threatening) situation requiring immediate action e.g. an asthmatic attack, sickle cell crisis, unresponsive person, etc. Contact can be made with the nurses on 815-5485 (Nurse Brown) or 3210343 (Nurse Dieguez). Please CALL (DON’T TEXT). Thank you.
Residential students can also make contact with the accommodation officers during out of hours on the following numbers 833-4716 (Ms. K. Campbell) and 822-3150 (Ms. R. Williams)
HEALTH PROMOTION AND EDUCATION
Students are addressed routinely at the start of each school year regarding the health services and system at the school. Health promotion is done at different intervals by way of blood drives, Basic Life Support training (BLS), HIV testing, annual health fair, talks on current health topics at general assembly etc.
HEALTH SCREENINGS
Students are required to submit a yearly medical done on MOE medical form upon admission to college. School Medicals should be handed to the nurses only, due to its confidential nature. This can be done during the registration process, or at the beginning of the school year.
The consent form, for all students under 18 requiring care, must be signed by parents and returned with the medicals. Students over the age of 18 are allowed to give consent on their own behalf. The original and a copy of the immunization card must also be presented to the nurses. Immunization must be up to date for age based on the Jamaican Government immunization schedule. Medicals will be vetted, and where necessary, students may be referred for further health management such as immunization update, dental treatment, standing orders etc.
REFERRAL SYSTEM
The Moneague College is within closest proximity to the Moneague Health Centre and therefore is the primary health institution for referral of students. Where a student warrants hospital care, then the St. Ann's Bay Hospital is the institution of choice. There are two private doctors who are within close proximity to the college; Dr. Stewart Mckoy (Claremont) and Dr. Sudarshan Mariyappa (Main Street Moneague) to whom students are often referred. Students, however, have the option of visiting their own doctors. The JDF, Moneague Camp, has always been instrumental in assisting in emergency situations. Referral to doctors or health facilities are done using The Moneague College’s medical referral form. These forms are to be signed by the attending physician and returned to the nurses for placement on the student’s health file.
Students who fall ill while on campus should be taken immediately to the Wellness Centre. The nurse, upon assessment of the student, will determine if there is need for further management.
Where the situation is deemed as an emergency, contact will be made with parents or next of kin and the student immediately transported to the closest relevant medical facility. There are designated drivers who assist in transporting students to the various health facilities. The JDF has been instrumental in transporting students and staff needing the use of an ambulance to hospital. Students requiring transfer to hospital or other emergency care facilities will be accompanied by a member of staff (e.g. nurse, guidance counsellor, accommodations officer etc.). Contact will be made with the accepting facility where necessary to alert them of the impending case. Next of kin will be asked to attend the health facility to which the student is being transported where the student will be discharged into their care. If the parents cannot be contacted and it is thought appropriate, the child will be taken immediately to the nearest suitable hospital. Nurse or office staff will continue to attempt to contact parents.
Where an accident or serious illness occurs on a school trip, the child will be taken to the best available hospital in the area and parents will be contacted as soon as possible.
In an urgent medical situation, the school’s medical referral form will be completed and the student sent to the relevant health department or private doctor. They may or may not be accompanied depending on the severity of the condition. Next of kin will be notified as appropriate. Medical referral forms should be completed by the attending physician and returned to the nurses for placement on the student’s health file.

Medical care not provided by the college will be at the expense of the student/parents.

In the event of a student becoming ill, the nurses should first be informed and the student assessed before any contact is made with the next of kin. Students and staff are advised not to contact next of kin without permission of the nurses as this may lead to undue anxiety for the next of kin.
When it is decided that a student will be going home, detained in the sick bay or sent to the doctor, the nurse will provide a written notification via the notice of student illness form to the relevant faculty members. Where a student is seen by nurses and deemed fit to resume classes, a class continuation form will be completed and handed to the student informing the lecturer of the student’s attendance at the Wellness Center and his/her fitness to resume class. Any student who is absent due to illness for three consecutive days or more must present a sick leave from their doctor upon their return, a copy of which must be handed to the registry and the original handed to school nurse. Where a student is ill for less than 3 days but an assignment deadline has been missed, evidence of being ill must also be provided. Residential students who have been placed on sick leave are expected to go home to recover.
When the nurse is not present for minor accidents or illnesses, they may be contacted via telephone for advice. Staff members and student leaders who have first aid training may be drafted in to assist in managing the case. All major cases should be transported to the nearest health facility. Protocols for transporting students to health facilities should be adhered to. No student should try to administer medical care to another student unless he/she has current first aid training or is being guided by a certificated medical practitioner.
In the event that a residential student falls ill and is confined to his/her room, the nurses MUST be notified of the ill student. A meal pass may be given for another student to collect the meal on behalf of the sick student or the nurses will make arrangements with the kitchen staff to get the meal to the ill student.
A student who is ill and has an examination to do may be accommodated at the Wellness Centre in doing such examination. Examination standards will remain the same and an invigilator should be present to oversee the student.
Students who have long term medical conditions should be registered with the local Health Clinic to get the long term medical care that they need. Our school liaises with Moneague Health Centre.
Numbers of emergency facilities are displayed throughout the Wellness Center.
Students requiring counselling or social support, can be referred to the Guidance Counsellor, but only with their consent. Referrals are done using the Guidance and Counselling Department Referral Form.
If a student has an accident while on campus, he/she should report same immediately to the nurses. The injured student will be attended to or referred to a healthcare facility for further management. An incident form will be completed by the nurses and forwarded to the Vice Principal of Student Services. Where a medical bill is incurred as a result of the injury, the student will be expected to pay the attending physician or health facility and then present the bill to the Accounts Department of the college where a claim will be made against the school’s accident and injuries liability insurance (School Mate Plan) plan for reimbursement. All claims must be submitted within 90 days of the accident/incident.
RECORD KEEPING
Nurses keep a daily log of all persons seen and treated. This is done via a log book. All health records are kept in a locked filing cabinet in the nurse’s office for confidentiality. Any medication given as per medical instruction from a physician is dated, timed and signed by the nurses. A register is kept with all students who have chronic illnesses as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Education. Students' medicals are handed to the registry for filing once the student has left the institution.
CONTAGIOUS ILLNESS
Any student displaying symptoms of a contagious disease (a disease which can easily be passed on to other people) will be sent home. He/she may come back to school when the risk of infecting others has passed and this is certified by a doctor’s note.
SPORTS FIXTURES AND MAJOR EVENTS
FIELD TRIPS
A list of all students going on field trips or other outings must be presented to the school nurse no less than 48 hours prior to the departure. This is important to ascertain medical clearance as well as to plan for any special health emergency that a student may experience while they are out. Where an accident or serious illness occurs on a school trip, the student will be taken to the best available health facilities in the area and parents will be contacted immediately. Persons in charge of trips should request the first aid kit from the nurses well in advance and this should be collected no less than 24 hours before departure. Where a trip falls on the weekend, the kit must be collected no later than 3pm on the preceding Friday.
SPORTS EVENTS
Home sports fixtures should have a nurse in attendance. The nurse is expected to work overtime to cover such fixtures and events. A calendar of all the various sporting events should be presented to the nurses along with a list of participants in order to ascertain their fitness to participate and plan for any emergency that may arise. A vehicle should be available to transport anyone with major injury to hospital.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU COME TO THE WELLNESS CENTRE
-
Mandatory questions as well as other questions regarding health will be asked. We urge persons not to be offended; this is a part of the assessment process, so we can accurately/effectively administer safe healthcare.
-
Please note personal information given to the nurse will be held in and will not be shared with anyone unless they are a part of your care.

-
Nurses are not authorized to administer unprescribed drugs including those categorized as “over the counter medication.” This is deemed as being outside of their legal scope of practice and as a result any adverse reaction to any medication given can have serious implication to their practice. Therefore, nurses will not be administering any medication, unless it was ordered by the physician. The Nurses are only allowed to administer over the counter medications where a prescription is produced from the doctor, while still exercising caution.
-
Only one visitor is allowed per person in the sick bay. Permission must be sought from the nurse on duty before entering the sick bay. This is to allow for privacy and rest. Sitting on the patient’s bed is not allowed. Chairs are provided for this purpose.
-
There is a sign on the Nurses’ door which indicates the current status/whereabouts of the nurse on duty; please observe same. This allows for smooth running of the facility.

-
In the event that the Nurse is seeing a client, and there is an emergency; the Nurse should be notified right away. The emergent client will be given preference over the stable client.
-
No client will be seen during the Nurses' lunch break unless it is an emergency case
-
The Wellness Centre has a dress code which must be adhered to. Exceptions will be made in emergency cases only.
