Introduction of School

The Moneague College School of Business is the largest school in the college.  It comprises a cadre of highly qualified lecturers who possess a wealth of experience both in academia as well as industry.  Some lecturers have also done industry furlough in their spare time in organizations such as the Companies Office of Jamaica among others to keep abreast of the changes in the business industry.  Additionally, several of our lecturers also have international qualifications as well as international teaching experience.

The mission of the Moneague College School of Business is “To promote excellence in education using cutting edge technology, underpinned by the tenets of collaboration, integrity and respect.  Our programme prepares students to become ethical professionals, insightful leaders and outstanding entrepreneurs who will change the economic landscape of the global environment.” 

We are also guided by our vision statement which is “To graduate exemplary professionals who epitomize global business standards and values.”  Hence, gaining acceptance to the School of Business is the ‘runway’ to ‘take off’ to the heights of your career in the field of business.  Our graduates have been employed in the private sector (banking industry, hotel industry, Credit Unions); in the Public sector as well internationally (recently An Accounting firm in the United States of America).

Real-World Learning

Our lecturers employ a variety of methodologies in delivering course content to students using face to face, online or a blended approach.  Students also get the opportunity to go on field trips as well as hear from guest presenters in the business industry.

Access to a Global Education Network

Both of the School’s programmes are accredited by the University Council of Jamaica  (UCJ), that means that Moneague has consistently shown a commitment to quality. The college also promotes and rewards scholastic achievement of students in the business programmes.  Recently some of our students got inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honour society (Jamaican chapter) based on their excellent academic performance.

 

Programmes Offered

The Moneague College School of Business in association with the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ) offers a four year Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.  Upon the successful completion of the first two years of the programme, students are awarded the Associate of Science Degree in Business Administration.

They may then choose to proceed to the third and fourth years of the programme to attain the Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

 

Overview of the Associate of Science Degree in Business Administration

Business Administration is absolutely essential for all students since it touches virtually all aspects of their lives – from work to home and leisure.  The programme offers students a solid foundation in core business concepts.  Students have the opportunity to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as their ability to work as a part of a team.  It also provides students with hands on experience in research projects, feasibility studies and business plan preparation.

By pursuing an Associate Degree in Business Studies students open the gate to a number of great career opportunities.

Overview of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration

The aim of the Bachelors Programme in Business Administration is to further equip future business leaders with the requisite knowledge and skills to effectively function in managerial positions in businesses as well as to operate their own businesses.  Students will have the opportunity to specialize in one of the following areas:

  1. Accounting

  2. Finance and Management

  3. Human Resources Management

  4. Marketing

For the Accounting as well as the Finance and Management options the CCCJ has partnered with the ACCA to offer additional pathways for students to earn further professional qualification in the field of Accounting.  Upon completion of the BSc programme, students who registered with the ACCA prior to graduation can receive exemptions and discounts for selecting this pathway.

 

Small Business Management

The Small Business Management course is undoubtedly the most impactful course within the programme. This course exposes all business students to the tools necessary to seek business opportunities to create and manage a small business.  To this end, our school hosts an annual Entrepreneurship Launch where the students launch their various businesses and display sample products which are usually of a very high quality.  This course is very comprehensive in preparing students to manage a small businesses.

 

Professional Opportunities

All students are required by the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica to complete 240 hours of Work Experience.  The students are usually placed by the Placement Office after undergoing a semester of preparation in collaboration with the Heart Trust NTA.  The Advisory Board of the school also assist in identifying businesses as well as in conducting mock interviews for final year students prior to the work experience activity.  This experience allows students to gain valuable industry experience as well as providing opportunities for networking.
